Morning Devotional:
I hadn’t seen or heard a weather forecast in a few days so when the skies over my town turned dark gray and I heard that first low rumbling of thunder last night, I got excited. And I mean really excited because I have been ready for a storm with all the fixings – the thunder, the lightning, the whipping wind, the pouring rain, all of the stuff. You may be thinking, why would I want all of that mess? To be honest, last night I needed to see God’s might at work.
I love a good storm. Rather than doing the sensible thing and seeking shelter, I’m the person who is at the window, or better yet, standing in the yard getting pelted by the rain and hail as the storm passes by. There’s a thrill to me that comes with seeing God’s creation echo God’s power. But last night, what I also needed was a place of grace – a place where I could let off some steam by pouring out my emotions, even if it meant yelling in perfect time with the thunder knowing that the God of the storm above me was keeping me in the cleft of the rock.
I didn’t get the thunder I wanted but I got a picture of our mighty God in Psalm 29 last night. If you get an opportunity today, give it a read. It says in it that “The God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.” The last words of this psalm are far better than the storm. “The Lord blesses his people with peace.”
