Morning Devotional:
I opened my eyes and was immediately confused. My phone said it was 5:30. Had I just slept through my alarm and was I late for work? It took several seconds for me to realize that no, I wasn’t late for anything. It was 5:30 in the evening, I had fallen asleep in my living room chair and the sun had gone down. I was sitting in total darkness.
Once I figured out that I wasn’t going crazy, I just sat there in the dark for a few minutes. As I did, I paid attention to how my eyes adjusted to the lack of light. After a while, with the help of a single night light I have in my bathroom and a streetlight on the corner outside my home, I could start to see some details. Soon, I could see enough to walk around and not step on anything or run into the furniture.
There are times when it feels like we are sitting in spiritual darkness, unable to see what’s ahead of us, much less a way out. My little darkness experiment reminded me of a promise God gives us in the scriptures. Isaiah 42:16 says, “I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, and not forsake them.”
As you grow in faith and trust in God, know that He will lead you out of the dark places and into the light of His love and grace.
