What Day is It?

The Burning Question:

What, in your opinion, is the most annoying phrase?

Morning Devotional:

It’s probably not going to be very Good.  That is what my son Korban said over the weekend when he heard what our host was making for supper.  Have you ever encountered someone who seems to have a talent for putting their foot in their mouth? Maybe they offer unsolicited advice or blurt out an insensitive comment. It can be frustrating, leaving us feeling hurt or misunderstood.

The Bible reminds us that words have power: “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly venom.” (James 3:8). We’ve all been there, on the receiving end of a clumsy comment or a misspoken phrase.

But here’s the good news: “Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.” (Proverbs 19:11). Instead of reacting in anger or frustration, we can choose grace.

Imagine someone tripping and falling. Our natural response would be to help them up, not to scold them for being clumsy. Perhaps the person who says the wrong thing is simply that – a bit clumsy with their words.

Here are some ways to extend grace:

  • Assume positive intent. Most people don’t mean to cause harm.
  • Take a breath. A moment of pause can prevent a hasty response.
  • Offer gentle clarification. Explain how their words landed, and offer a more appropriate way to phrase things.
  • Remember, we all make mistakes. We’ve likely said the wrong thing ourselves at some point.

By extending grace, we not only protect our own peace of mind, but we also model Christ-like compassion.
