What Day Is It?

Burning Question:

It’s National Clean Off Your Desk Day!  Be honest – how messy is your desk right now?  Describe it.

Morning Devotional:

My office at home got too dark for my aging eyes so last week I ordered a pair of desk lamps. After spending part of the evening assembling them, I turned them on with high hopes. They are beautiful, but not as bright as I thought they would be.

The exercise made me think about how often I try to create my own “light” in my spiritual life. Too often I serve the Lord in my own wisdom, using my own strength and finding my own solutions. It works on occasion, but never in the fullness that God intends.

So, when Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” in Matthew chapter five, it wasn’t because we are naturally bright and glowy people. It was to remind us that His light shines through us when we trust in Him as our Lord and Savior.

On my own, I am a pretty dim bulb. But when I’m plugged into Jesus Christ, I can shine brightly for Him as the city on the hill He intends.
