Morning Devotional:
Do you have a sweet tooth or is a salty snack more your thing?
I usually have a pretty strong sweet tooth but for me this past week, it has been salt. Give me a bowl of salty popcorn and I am as happy as a clam. Salt itself is an interesting compound, one that comes with a great lesson for us at Christians.
As you may remember from science class, salt is a combination of sodium and chlorine. While sodium is an active but harmless element, chlorine is poisonous. Interestingly, when the two elements are combined, they produce salt – a substance which we all know is used to preserve and bring out the flavor in food.
Take the example of salt and swap out sodium and chlorine with the truth of the gospel and God’s grace. In the same way, if we present the truth without grace, it often produces an offensive and sometimes poisonous effect on those with whom we share it. However, if we combine truth and grace together, we have a much different result. If we’re called to be the salt of the earth, perhaps we need to remember that salt has two very important ingredients. John 1:17 says, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
