What Day is it?

The Burning Question:

What is something you gave up when it got to be popular or trendy?

Morning Devotional:

During the month of April the Minnesota State Patrol conducted a campaign to crack down on distracted driving. By the time the campaign was over, troopers issued nearly 5,400 citations for breaking the state’s hands-free driving law – a 57 percent increase from a similar campaign last year.  That’s a staggering statistic, but what I find unbelievable is what some people have been caught doing behind the wheel instead of focusing on their driving.

There are the usual culprits such as texting, holding phones to your ear and applying makeup while driving, among other things. Some tasks were a little more radical. Some have been caught checking their bank accounts – a few on their laptops. One person was caught shaving while he was driving. Others have been caught knitting or crocheting, someone was recently caught steering with their elbows while eating a bowl of soup, and then there was the person reading a paperback book taped to their steering wheel. Audiobook, anyone?

Distractions like those are obviously dangerous, but there are other types of distractions that can be harmful to our spiritual life. Our thoughts can wander off to negative places. When our emotions are left unchecked or get out of hand, that can lead us to do things we aren’t proud of or say things we wish we could take back.

In Song of Solomon 2:15, the speaker refers to little foxes as destructive animals that ruin vineyards. The smallest of distractions can derail our lives and our faith, and although they’re common, the little foxes can be caught. When we intentionally steer our hearts and minds toward the things of God, we’ll avoid the crash.
