What Day is it?

Burning Question:

What was the one meal you hoped your parents wouldn’t make?

Morning Devotional:

Just… couldn’t… do it.

We had been driving all day. Coming back from our Thanksgiving gathering in eastern Pennsylvania, we knew we’d eventually hit that big winter storm. Sure enough, just as we were almost through Ohio, the snow started falling. By the time we reached my wife’s parents’ place in northern Indiana, it had been coming down thick and heavy for hours.

And that’s when we faced our dilemma. My in-laws live on a steep incline, and while their driveway had been plowed, it definitely wasn’t clear. I tried several times to get up it. Failed every time.

My father-in-law came outside and told me what to do. “Back up about 30 feet on the road, get some good speed, and then turn right up into the driveway.” I didn’t even try, just hopped out and said, “You do it.”

He didn’t make it all the way up either—but he got a whole lot farther than I did. And that’s where we parked.

There are moments when we simply can’t get up the hill on our own. We try, we strain, we give it our best effort, but we still slide backward. And in those moments, God often sends someone wiser, more experienced, or just steady enough to help us get farther than we could have alone.

Sometimes His help looks like strength… and sometimes it looks like a father-in-law taking the wheel.

May we remember that needing help isn’t failure. It’s an invitation to trust the One who can carry us where we can’t get by ourselves.
