Morning Devotional:

As tax season rolls around, my wife Kris and I often find ourselves eagerly awaiting our refund. With seven kids, it’s almost a given that we’ll receive something back, but it always sparks some debate between us. I’m naturally inclined to save, not because I have a specific goal in mind, but because I find comfort in knowing we have a financial safety net. Kris, on the other hand, sees that money and immediately starts thinking about what projects around the house it could fund or if we need to repair or replace a vehicle.

So, we have to come together and have a good discussion. I’ve come to realize that our ultimate safety and security are found in Christ, not in the amount of money we have in the bank. However, Kris sometimes needs to dial back her ambitions a bit to ensure we maintain a reasonable safety net and remain good stewards of our finances. It’s all part of being a married couple striving to honor God and each other.

In Ephesians 5:21, the apostle Paul writes, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” This verse underscores the importance of mutual respect and cooperation in marriage. We both bring unique perspectives and strengths to the table, and finding common ground requires humility and compromise.

My inclination towards saving reflects a desire for financial security, which is commendable. But I must remember that true security is found in Christ alone. Proverbs 19:23 reassures me, “The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” Trusting in God’s provision and wisdom can alleviate the anxiety that often accompanies financial decision-making.

Kris’s eagerness to invest in home projects or other needs demonstrates her desire to steward our resources well and improve our family’s quality of life. Proverbs 24:3-4 advises, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” When approached with wisdom and discernment, financial investments can contribute to the flourishing of our family and our home.

As Kris and I navigate these discussions, we must remember to seek God’s guidance and trust in His provision for our family’s needs.
