Morning Devotional:
I will never forget the day she called me by my name – sort of.
My legal first name as printed on my birth certificate is Beth. It’s not Elizabeth like many other people assume. It’s just Beth. I didn’t like my name growing up because it didn’t really lend itself to a cool nickname. That is, until my niece Trista started learning how to talk.
One day I went to visit my brother’s family and when my sister-in-law answered the door, little Trista was right behind her. When she saw it was me at the door, her face lit up, she planted her hands on her little hips and boldly proclaimed, “Hi, Bethie!” I loved it, the name stuck, and for a long time that’s what she called me. It was a special thing between the two of us.
Our Father God is known by many names and each name is a reminder of an aspect of His character and the relationship we have with Him. My favorite name for God is Abba, or Daddy, which we find in Romans 8:15. It’s a name that tells us that we have been adopted into His family, that we can crawl up in His lap as His precious child, and the name that says He cares for us as Father. He is our Father and we are His children when we are in Christ. It says so in His name.
