Burning Question:
What is an everyday skill you’ve accepted that you will never master?
Morning Devotional:
I like to think I am a crafty person but I don’t get to do craft projects nearly as much as I would like. My favorite craft is scrapbooking and paper crafting, primarily because it’s a craft I can complete quickly.
I had forgotten to buy a birthday card the other day, but I had a little time on my hands and a lot of supplies in my closet to make one. I got things organized, chose paper colors, coordinated a design and got to work. There was one problem, though. The blade on my favorite paper cutter was really bad. It barely cut through cardstock and when it did, it left a horrible edge. The blade was way too dull.
Have you ever tried to accomplish a project with dull, rusty, or broken tools? It takes a lot more work to get something done right. The author of Ecclesiastes recognized that when he wrote in chapter ten, “If the axe is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed.” The author follows that with another observation: “But skill will bring success.”
We have been given a number of tools to walk out the Christian walk and exercise our faith, haven’t we? Things like prayer, our individual gifts and callings, and God’s Word. Are we keeping our tools and our skills sharp and well-tuned?
