Morning Devotional:
Have you ever noticed that trouble sometimes comes with the offer of free food?
You don’t have to look too far to see it. There was Adam and Eve and that tree with the forbidden fruit. Jacob and Esau and the bowl of stew. The Israelites and the whole quail thing. But we also see in the Word that much of the richness of God’s character is symbolized by food as well. Take for instance the manna in the wilderness and the miracle of the loaves and fishes – they symbolize God’s perfect supply. Jesus called himself the bread of life, and in Revelation, our eternal union with the Lord involves a marriage feast. I find the use of food in the Word so interesting, especially when you consider that in so many of those stories, what God wants us to know the most is the ache in our spiritual bellies is best satisfied in Him.
Isaiah 55 includes a great invitation for us – a way to see our greatest hunger met:
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.”
That hunger pang in your heart? God will satisfy it when you go to Him.
