The Burning Question:
What is your favorite scent in the summer?
Morning Devotional:
For days I have been trying to open a ceiling light fixture in my home that needed a new bulb. It is one of those frosted glass dome styled fixtures where you have to twist off the decorative dome in order to access the bulbs. The problem was that the domed cover was stuck, and for the life of me I could not loosen it.
I knew the fixture could be opened from prior experience because the last time I changed the bulbs, a friend of mine with far superior upper body strength came to my rescue and opened it for me. This time, I was determined to do it solo.
For the better part of a week, whenever I would think about it, I would climb my ladder and give that glass dome a try. It wouldn’t budge. I’d pound on the edge of the fixture with my hand, thinking that might jar it loose. Nothing. I would move the ladder to an identical fixture in another room and open that one, making sure I was trying to turn it the right way and I was. By the time yesterday rolled around, I was frustrated and ready to throw in the towel. I looked up to the ceiling and said, “Lord, what am I supposed to do?”
That’s when I heard Him say to me, “One more time.” I stopped, pondered those words, and when I obeyed that still small and surprisingly familiar voice, I found success.
That was an object lesson I needed yesterday. My mission to change a light bulb pales in comparison to the mission we as believers have to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, but perhaps you can make the connection. Hebrews 10:35-36 say this:
“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
