Burning Question:
What are you doing for Valentine’s Day?
Morning Devotional:
So today is Valentine’s Day, a day to celebrate love. With me being single my entire life, it’s not exactly my favorite day. I do have reason to celebrate Valentine’s Day though. It’s because of what comes tomorrow – all of the chocolates in the stores go on sale!
Can a person ever have too much chocolate in life? It improves your mood, it’s a great source of magnesium. It has to be good for your health because it comes from a bean, right? Doesn’t that make it a vegetable? Yet we know that there are many things in life that, if taken to an extreme, become harmful. That’s why self-control is so important. We get into trouble when we overindulge in something and self-control is all about avoiding overindulgence.
In 1 Corinthians chapter nine, Paul talks about an athlete who exhibits self-control. He writes, “Every competitor exercises self-control in all respects. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we do it to receive an imperishable one.” We as believers must be motivated to show self-control. We do so for a much higher purpose than a prize that does not last.
I have no self control on my own. The chocolates in the stores are going to be difficult for me to resist. But self-control is really Spirit control. Living with dependence on Him gives you and me the power to resist temptation. Usually when saying “no” to something, I am saying “yes” to something better! Thank you, Lord, for helping me say yes to You!
