What Day Is It?

Burning Question:

It’s School Nurses Day!  Why were you sent to the school nurse?

Morning Devotional:

It’s a new season of road construction in my neighborhood and for some reason, the city crew decided to coordinate the change of detour between my home and the studio by moving their orange cones while I was driving the route.

Why do those orange cones put us in such a sour mood? For me, I don’t enjoy being detoured.

I like routines. I find the predictability of going from point A to point B quite comforting. But does life work that way all the time? Rarely. We all know detours exist because construction work is needed. When you find yourself on a detour, God is trying to fix, build, correct or improve something. It may be something happening around you but most likely, it’s you. In our spiritual lives those detours are called trials or sufferings, and as Paul says in Romans 5, trials “produce perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

My current commute is not fun but the street will be so much better in the end. We can and should be looking forward to the work being done in our hearts and lives by the Lord. What He’s building there is going to be great.
