What Day is it?

Burning Question:

What is the one item every junk drawer must have to be a real junk drawer?

Morning Devotional:

They Didn’t Need Me

Last week, as I was leaving for work, I noticed my daughter Kalvary’s dome light was on in her car. I reached in and turned it off. It seemed bright enough that I figured the battery would probably survive the night, so I headed in to work.

Sure enough, right in the middle of the show, I get a text:

“Dad, can you call me? My battery is dead and Malachi and I can’t get the hood open.”

A few minutes later: “Never mind, I got it!”

Then another text: asking how to jump a battery.

Now I’m mentally preparing to leave the rest of the show to Beth and rush home. I’m also feeling that little nudge of guilt—I should have done more when I saw that light.

And then the final text came:

“Never mind again. I was totally overthinking it.”

They had figured it out.

They didn’t need me.

As a dad, that’s a strange mix of emotions. You want your kids to be capable and independent… but you also like being needed.

And that’s different from our relationship with God. We never outgrow our need for Him. We never “figure it out” to the point where we don’t depend on Him anymore.

Jesus said in John 15:5, “Apart from Me you can do nothing.”

The goal of the Christian life isn’t independence from God—it’s deeper dependence on Him.

Yes, we grow. Yes, we learn. Yes, we mature. But maturity in Christ doesn’t mean we need Him less. It means we recognize more quickly just how much we need Him.
