Morning Devotional:

It Never Fails, She Always Wants to Stay for Supper

Mercy has a friend who lives across the street. The two of them are inseparable, back and forth between houses so often that it feels like they’re sisters. Sometimes we have to text her mom just to get Mercy to come home. Other times, when they’re at our place and supper time rolls around, we have to send her friend back across the street.

And without fail, every single night, she asks, “Can I just stay for supper?”

We’re never serving anything amazing. It’s not like we’re putting out a feast. She’s not afraid to go home. Honestly, I think she just wants to be here—to sit at the table, to be part of the conversation, to belong in that moment.

And as much as we love her, we’ve decided that, most nights, supper is for our family.

But it got me thinking…

There’s something powerful about being invited to the table. There’s something in us that longs to belong, to be included, to be part of the family. And that’s exactly the picture Scripture gives us of what Jesus has done for us.

Revelation 3:20 says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

Jesus doesn’t just offer us forgiveness from a distance, He invites us to the table. He invites us into relationship, into fellowship, into family.

And here’s the beautiful part: the table of God isn’t limited to just a few seats. There’s room for anyone who wants to come.
