What Day Is It?

Burning Question:

What is your best relationship advice?

Morning Devotional:

My little Yorkie, Abbie, is a bundle of joy, and she sees everyone and everything as a potential friend. While I was cleaning my garage the other day, Abbie was enjoying some time in the front yard watching the world go by. A neighbor of mine came walking up the street. I have seen her walking by for months, but we’d never actually spoken. Abby, of course, went nuts. With her tail wagging like crazy, she started pulling at her lead in order to endear herself to my neighbor.

My neighbor walked up my driveway and the introductions began. She knelt down to pet Abbie and my pup happily obliged. We ended up chatting for a good ten minutes or so – about our dogs, our flower beds, the weather, and of course, Abbie’s boundless energy.

I couldn’t help but think about how easily Abbie, in her desire to make a new friend, had broken through a wall of social shyness that had been there for years. I wouldn’t have thought of introducing myself to my neighbor as she walked by my home. I probably wouldn’t have tried to start a conversation with her, much less build a relationship. My bubble is way too comfortable. But now, I know a neighbor that is originally from Europe, retired several years ago and is as enamored with dogs as I am.

Paul writes in Philippians chapter two, “In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” God calls us to connection and community, and we answer that call by intentionally stepping outside our comfort zones and reaching out to those around us in Christian love. If it takes a crazy puppy, so be it. The Lord will show you how to open the door.
