What Day Is It?

Burning Question:

It is Sanctity of Human Life Day. Can you share a moment that strengthened your belief in the value of every human life?

Morning Devotional:

After nearly two weeks of dealing with a parade of contractors and construction work in my home, I finally had an evening of complete peace last night.

As I was getting ready to turn in for the night, I turned off the TV and all of the lights in my home, save for the lamp on my bedside table. I crawled into bed only to hear a sound I didn’t recognize.

Given my line of work, I’m not one to let a stray sound go without identifying it so I got up and proceeded to investigate. It was a faint but steady hum, mechanical in nature, and coming from my newly renovated bathroom. After a few moments, I realized that an overhead fan I hardly ever use – one in which the switch is in my utility room two rooms over – had been turned on and likely left running for almost a week. My house had been so chaotic and noisy that I never realized the fan had been running for so long.

As I went back to bed, I considered my process in determining the offending noise. I had cleared out all the other audio clutter, heard what I thought was a sound, and searched intently for the source. The process begged the question:  Do I seek out God’s voice in the same way?

John 10:27 says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” I have often prayed to be like His sheep, to hear Him and follow Him in complete trust.  How sharp are your ears when it comes to listening for the voice of God? Do you know how to cut through the noise around you to not only hear Him speak, but follow Him as well?
