What Day Is It?

Burning Question:

No Burning Question today – Happy New Year!

Morning Devotional:

On the first few days of a new year, many of us wish each other a hearty “Happy New Year!” Sometimes, as we begin that new year, we need more than that enthusiastic greeting from the people around us. We need some hope.

A new year tends to bring a lot of questions:  Will this relationship I’m in last? Will the economy improve?  Will I get that job, that raise or promotion? Will my health hold out? Will I live to see the end of this year?  All very legitimate questions – and when we ask those questions, our Creator is quick to come to us with these words:  “Don’t be afraid; don’t be discouraged.”

Those are the words God told Joshua a few thousand years ago. As Joshua was about to lead God’s people into the promised land, he had every reason to be afraid. This was an enormous task ahead of him, and he was well aware of the dangers that he and the people would soon be facing. He needed encouragement and God gave it to him, by saying this in Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Whatever happens in the year to come is not a matter of chance. Nothing will be a surprise to God and no matter what happens, He will be with us through it all.
