Morning Devotional:

When you praise the Lord, how vocal are you?

One of my all-time favorite Christmas memories unfolded in a department store years ago. I was shopping for my nieces when I headed towards the toy department. Suddenly, a wonderful sight caught my eye. I was walking behind a young boy and his mother as they turned into one of the aisles. There was a sense of anticipation about the boy, like he was about to experience something magical.

Then, it happened. Christmas music – one everyone recognized – blasted over the store’s speakers. In that perfect moment, the boy erupted in song. He threw his arms up and with unbridled joy, sang “Joy to the World, the Lord has come!” as he gazed at the dazzling toy displays.

I watched, completely charmed, thinking, “This is amazing!” His mother seemed slightly embarrassed, trying to shush him gently. But the boy was lost in the moment, celebrating God’s gift with gusto. It was like a mini praise service right there in the toy aisle, and I loved it!

If you’re going to belt something out in the middle of a toy section, let it be that! That single moment in the toy store aisle set the perfect tone for my Christmas that year. The meaning of the moment has stayed with me ever since. I mean, shouldn’t that mother’s initial embarrassment dissolve into pure joy? After all, isn’t that what Christmas is about? Celebrating the arrival of our Savior?

If I had thought a little faster, I would have joined in song with that little boy. How could we not, knowing the Savior of the world has come to us?
