Morning Devotional:
It took forever but I finally figured out what she wanted to eat.
As long as I have had her, my dog Zoey has been a finicky eater. She definitely has her likes and dislikes. She will not eat any meats other than beef or chicken, she wouldn’t even dream of eating a vegetable, and she adores cheese – shredded sharp cheddar cheese in particular, I’m not sure why.
As Zoey has aged significantly and lost most of her teeth, her menu choices have narrowed significantly and any food I give her has to be wet or run through a food processor. She has also started to eat much less than she used to – a sign of her advanced age – to the point where I have begun to worry about the rate of her decline.
She hasn’t eaten much of anything in the past few days which has made me wonder if it is her health or the menu being offered by the Crosby kitchen that is causing her nose to turn up. So last night, I offered a doggy buffet with samples of everything I had available for her. No success, except for a few pieces of shredded cheese she nibbled on.
I was at a total loss until I made my dinner last night – spaghetti and meatballs. There was something about the aroma of the meatballs that prompted my blind and deaf dog to make her way to the kitchen and tell me that this was the food she was seeking. I was thrilled to find out what she wanted and I was more than happy to see her tummy get filled.
It’s easy to find excuses for not filling up on God’s word. Missing that daily meal of Bible study is like shorting yourself of much needed nutrition. We may try to alleviate our spiritual hunger with a number of empty solutions but instead, let’s make it a point to be like the prophet Jeremiah, who said to the Lord, “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight.” (Jeremiah 15:16)
