Morning Devotional:
For the past year and a half or so I have been blessed to be able to hire someone to come into my home to do some housecleaning for me. It’s not that I can’t do it – it is a challenge for me to do at times, I lead a very busy lifestyle, and to be honest, I like to be able to support a local business by doing so. They come once a month and the only stipulation I have with the person that comes is that I have to have the clutter in my home pretty much picked up before they arrive so they’re not cleaning up around it.
This morning as I was getting ready for work, I remembered that my next scheduled cleaning day was today. TODAY! I had about five minutes to pick up and put away everything I needed to in order for my cleaning person to work. I was frantically putting away dishes, emptying garbage cans, picking up shoes, putting away laundry, you name it. If it could be stuffed in a cabinet or hidden in a drawer, that’s where it went. If I could hide it out of sight, it was gone.
As I rushed out the door I thought to myself, this is so not like the relationship between God and my sin. It is not my place to make myself presentable in order for God to do the housekeeping needed in my heart of hearts to redeem me. I need to let my whole heart be exposed to the light of His mercy and grace in order for Him to sweep it out and make me clean. We all do. As 1 John 1:7 reminds us, we have been cleansed of our sinfulness by Jesus’ work on the cross and that causes me to praise Him today. I hope it does for you as well.
