Morning Devotional:
A meal shared nourishes the soul.
I saw that quote on a mural in a cafeteria a while back and it never left me because I believe it to be very true. It certainly played out for me last night as I got together with a group of old friends for a barbecue. We all used to work together at a store two friends in our group owned together and we spent the evening catching up on life, enjoying a great meal, and reveling in each other’s company. I loved the night and I found myself amazingly restored after a trying day at work.
There really is something about gathering together with others at the dinner table. You take in that which is good – nourishment, yes, but also fellowship and many cases, restoration. In the case of a famous dinner in the gospels, a special meal not only nurtured a certain group of men’s souls but anchored the church to follow in the great sacrifice Jesus made for us. Here’s what the Word has to say about it: “On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ ” That’s a meal that brings me to the place of worship to the One who gave His life for us.
