They Didn\u2019t Need Me<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week, as I was leaving for work, I noticed my daughter Kalvary\u2019s dome light was on in her car. I reached in and turned it off. It seemed bright enough that I figured the battery would probably survive the night, so I headed in to work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure enough, right in the middle of the show, I get a text:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDad, can you call me? My battery is dead and Malachi and I can\u2019t get the hood open.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A few minutes later: \u201cNever mind, I got it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Then another text: asking how to jump a battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m mentally preparing to leave the rest of the show to Beth and rush home. I\u2019m also feeling that little nudge of guilt\u2014<\/span>I should have done more when I saw that light.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And then the final text came:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNever mind again. I was totally overthinking it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They had figured it out.<\/span><\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t need me.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a dad, that\u2019s a strange mix of emotions. You want your kids to be capable and independent\u2026 but you also like being needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s different from our relationship with God. We never outgrow our need for Him. We never \u201cfigure it out\u201d to the point where we don\u2019t depend on Him anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus said in John 15:5, <\/span>\u201cApart from Me you can do nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The goal of the Christian life isn\u2019t independence from God\u2014it\u2019s deeper dependence on Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, we grow. Yes, we learn. Yes, we mature. But maturity in Christ doesn\u2019t mean we need Him less. It means we recognize more quickly just how much we need Him.<\/span><\/p>\n
