They’re both farsighted, and the glasses help them see clearly, especially up close. Zebedee actually likes his glasses… but more often than not, he’s not wearing them.

I’ll look at him and say, “Hey buddy, where are your glasses?” He’ll pause and then say, “Oh yeah,” and go find them. The thing is, he needs them. He’s had headaches without them, and they make a noticeable difference. Still, for some reason, he keeps taking them off – maybe because he forgets, or maybe because he feels a little self-conscious about wearing them.

And that got me thinking, how often do we do that with our faith?

God has given us something that brings clarity, purpose, and peace. We know we need it. We even say we love it. But sometimes, when we’re out in the world – at work, school, or with certain people – we tuck that thing away. We don’t want to seem different. We feel awkward about being too bold or too open about following Jesus. So, we quietly take off the very thing that helps us see.

Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.”

There’s no shame in the truth that has changed us. There’s no reason to hide the grace that saved us. Just like Zebedee needs his glasses to see clearly, we need to live out our faith openly – not just when it’s easy, but especially when it’s not.

So today, wear your faith like glasses. Don’t be afraid to put them on – and keep them on – because it’s how you see the world rightly, and how others may come to see Jesus more clearly through you.

by Ryan Freed

What Glasses?
