It was a real tug-of-war on my heart trying to leave the house yesterday afternoon. I had to go back to work for a third time, and my puppy, Abbie, would not have it. She was so upset I was leaving that she clamped onto my leg with her front legs and refused to let go. My mind was racing with recording I needed to do and a host of other tasks that needed to get done. Hers was overcome by the most frantic of pleas. She just wanted me to stay. I left her behind and soon afterward, the guilt of leaving that simple, devoted love of my puppy overwhelmed me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isn’t that a picture of our spiritual lives? I\u2019m very familiar with the peace that comes from being in God’s presence, yet it can be so easy to tear myself away from it for the sake of my schedule. My soul wants to cling to Him, but my mind runs through all the things that demand my attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Luke 10, we find Martha so busy and distracted with serving that she grew frustrated with her sister, Mary, who was simply sitting at Jesus\u2019s feet. Jesus told her, \u201cMartha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed\u2014or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better\u201d (Luke 10:41-42). It\u2019s a critical lesson for us all. Choosing to sit with the Lord is the one necessary thing. The other responsibilities will still be there, but time with Him is what is needed. Let\u2019s choose what is better, not just what feels urgent.<\/span><\/p>\n
