This year, I stumbled across a treasure trove of one of the most prized mushrooms out there: the mighty chanterelle. They’re golden, flavorful, and a favorite among chefs around the world. And until this year, I’d hardly found any.

So when I discovered a good patch, I was thrilled. I brought home the first batch, cleaned them up (or so I thought), and cooked them in lots of butter with garlic and salt. Chanterelles are known for having a nutty, slightly fruity flavor—and at first bite, that flavor came through. But so did something else… grit. Like sand. That satisfying dish quickly turned disappointing. All because I didn’t clean them well enough.

Thankfully, I found more, and the next time, I was much more thorough. I took my time cleaning them properly—and what a difference. The same mushrooms tasted incredible once the grit was gone.

It made me think: just like a little bit of sand can ruin an amazing meal, a little bit of sin, pride, bitterness, or compromise can take the joy out of our walk with Christ. It might not seem like much at first, but over time, it affects our thoughts, our relationships, our peace, even our witness.

Galatians 5:9 says,
“A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”

Sometimes it’s the small stuff that sneaks in and affects everything. Maybe it’s a grudge we’ve been holding, a habit we’ve excused, or words we’ve spoken without love. On the surface, everything might look fine—but deep down, the grit is there. And it keeps us from fully tasting and enjoying the goodness God intends for us.

Thankfully, God is in the business of cleansing and restoring. When we come to Him honestly, He gently points out what needs to be cleaned, and then He does the work in us—making us whole again.

So today, take a moment to ask: is there any grit in your life that needs cleaning out? Bring it to Jesus. Because when we let Him do that refining work, we experience the fullness of the life He’s given us—rich, deep, and truly satisfying.

-Ryan

Bible Quiz:

Question: Who was probably the most deceptive Future Father in Law in the Bible?

Answer: Laban Father in Law to Jacob Genesis 29

Storytime: The World Really is a small place.

Just one More Thing!

What Day is it?
