Being the self-proclaimed king of saving money on electronics, I recommended a couple of trusted sites for refurbished phones. I gave her some solid “dad advice”: make sure it’s an unlocked Android, and ideally stick with a brand I know well—so I can help if something goes wrong.

She followed through, waited patiently for the phone to arrive… but when it did, we found it was locked to AT&T. And we don’t have AT&T. So back it went.

Round two. A few weeks later, another package arrived. But this time, it wasn’t just the wrong carrier—it was the wrong type of phone. If you run into trouble, I probably won’t be able to help.”

But of course, she ran into trouble.

She tried to figure it out but eventually said, “Dad, I’ve never felt so stupid. Nothing works the way I expect it to.”

In that moment, I found myself backpedaling on my earlier declaration. Because even though I didn’t know the iPhone system, I do know how to Google. I know how to troubleshoot. And more importantly—I know how to be there for my daughter when she’s overwhelmed.

Scripture:
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” —Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

Sometimes, helping someone doesn’t mean having all the answers ahead of time.
