“Sheltered in the Storm”<\/span><\/p>\n

Monday night brought tornado warnings to our area\u2014one of those moments when the sky turns ominous and the air feels heavy with uncertainty. What struck me as almost funny was realizing not all our kids were home. “Mercy and Zebedee are at the neighbors’,” my wife told me. My parental instincts kicked in:\u00a0<\/span>They should be home for this.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0Who knew how long the storm might last?<\/span><\/p>\n

I walked over to find our neighbor on her porch. “They said they’d just go to the basement and keep playing,” she explained. But I insisted: “No, call them up\u2014they need to come home. Supper’s soon anyway.” Moments later, Mercy and Zebedee came traipsing across the street. “Why do we\u00a0<\/span>have<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to come home?” Mercy asked, her tone laced with youthful defiance. “Well,” I replied, “don’t you think you should be home for a\u00a0<\/span>tornado<\/span><\/i>?” She smirked, and we all headed to our basement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, the storm passed quickly, sparing us from harm. But that night left me with two lessons: First, children’s innocence can make light of even serious dangers\u2014they’d happily keep playing through a tornado warning. And second, as adults, we’re reminded how little control we truly have. When the sirens sound, all we can do is seek shelter, trust and pray.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Life gives us moments when, like children in a storm, we’re tempted to keep “playing” through warnings\u2014pretending we’re invincible or that dangers don’t apply to us. But wisdom teaches us to recognize our limits and run to safety. For our family, that meant gathering in the basement; for our souls, it means running to God, our ultimate shelter. The next time life’s storms threaten, may we have the wisdom to stop playing, the humility to seek refuge, and the faith to trust the One who protects us.<\/span><\/p>\n
