Last night was my first opportunity to watch some of the Olympic coverage. I always find it inspiring to watch not only the competitions, but also the stories of the athletes themselves and the battles they faced to get there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One athlete\u2019s story in particular always ministers to me and that\u2019s the story of Olympic runner Derek Redmond. Redmond was a British sprinter and twice held the record for running the 400-meter race. He was also on the world championship team in the 4×400 meter relay in 1991.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redmond had been plagued with injuries during his career, and while running a semifinal heat at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, he tore a hamstring about 250 meters from the finish line. Instead of quitting the race, Redmond decided to keep running toward the finish line, with every step causing him excruciating pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suddenly, a man jumps out of the stands, fights his way past security and runs toward the injured runner. It is Redmond\u2019s father, who wraps his arm around his son, and as he waves off officials trying to get him off the track, Jim Redmond helps his injured, physically and emotionally defeated son cross the finish line.<\/span><\/p>\n

I look at that story and can\u2019t help but think of times when I feel like Derek Redmond. I feel like I am limping on the race of faith with no hope of finishing. There is someone running alongside us, though, not only cheering us on but also lifting us up when we\u2019re struggling to get to the finish line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 37 says, \u201c<\/span>The <\/span>Lord<\/span> makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;<\/span> though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the <\/span>Lord<\/span> upholds him with his hand.\u201d You\u2019ll get across the finish line. Better yet, He\u2019ll help you finish well.<\/span><\/p>\n
