These are kinda rare these days, but it was awesome. Our kids are old enough now that some of the teenagers can babysit and get the younger ones to bed so we can get out. We didn’t do anything fancy, just our usual stuff. We browsed our favorite thrift store, tried a new restaurant, and saw a movie my wife really wanted to see. We just had a blast hanging out and talking.

One moment really stuck with me. We were at the restaurant, sharing a meal and drinking water (who needs extra calories, right?) and just enjoying each other’s company. I happened to look over at another couple a few booths away. When their food came, I couldn’t help but smile. They were sharing a plate, had water glasses like us, and even had their napkins set up the same way. It was like we were doing the exact same thing, even though they’ve probably been married like 20 years longer than us!

Seeing them together, still so into each other after all that time, made me feel really encouraged. It gave me hope that maybe in 20 years, some young couple will see us at a restaurant and feel just as encouraged by our love as I did by that older couple’s.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.
