Morning Devotional<\/span>:<\/p>\n

Last night I was thinking about iconic newspaper headlines. You can probably remember some good ones, right? The Chicago Tribune\u2019s \u201cDewey Defeats Truman\u201d issue is up there as a big missed election call. There\u2019s \u201cThe First Footstep,\u201d one that appeared when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969. But one of my favorites came to mind as I was getting ready to turn in for the night. \u201cBirds Take Down Plane\u201d – the headline that appeared in a newspaper the morning after the Miracle on the Hudson took place on January 15th, 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was on that clear January day that US Airways flight 1549 hit a flock of geese shortly after takeoff from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. As the engines powered down and pilots Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles determined an emergency landing wasn’t an option, the pair expertly landed the plane atop New York City\u2019s Hudson River. Everyone on board the flight survived, hence the name \u201cMiracle on the Hudson.\u201d I remembered thinking, how could something so small as birds take down a commercial jetliner?\u00a0 Truthfully, it doesn\u2019t take much for something small to wreak a lot of havoc, both in life and in faith.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes t<\/span>he smallest of compromises or seemingly innocent little detour in our walk with God can set us on a path of self-destruction. The Lord does give us a plan for what to do in those times where we are tempted to walk down a wrong path, though. It’s a word I hang on to a lot and it comes from Proverbs 4:23:\u00a0 “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”\u00a0 We can’t leave the doorways of our hearts open for anything to come inside. We need to be proactive, get into the Word, be accountable to your pastor or brother or sister in Christ, and keep your line of communication open to God. We can’t afford to be lured away – because the smallest of compromises can truly take us down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
