Let us suppose for a moment, that I were to write a letter to<\/div>\n
every major newspaper in America saying the following:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I think it should be considered extremely odd if, the elected officials<\/div>\n
of the United States of America, in obedience to having been called<\/div>\n
to serve by the people through their election, did not make it their<\/div>\n
first official act to genuinely ask Almighty God, Who rules over the<\/div>\n
entire universe and holds the supreme position of authority over all<\/div>\n
governments and Whose merciful help heals every human short-coming,<\/div>\n
should humbly ask for His help, guidance, and blessing to declare sacred<\/div>\n
the freedoms and happiness of the people of the United States, who<\/div>\n
have instituted a government by and for themselves for these essential<\/div>\n
purposes: that God would enable everyone involved in managing<\/div>\n
that government to effectively carry out their duties. Offering this<\/div>\n
demonstration of respect and obedience to the God Who graciously<\/div>\n
gives us every public and private good is something I\u2019m sure you feel as<\/div>\n
strongly about as I do, perhaps more so\u2014and certainly not less than our<\/div>\n
fellow citizens. Surely, no people can be obligated to adore the hand of<\/div>\n
God, which directs the course of all people, more than the people of the<\/div>\n
United States.” <\/div>\n

No doubt I would be labeled a \u201creligious nutcase\u201d and many<\/div>\n
Letters to the Editor would be printed wagging fingers at me<\/div>\n
about the \u201cseparation of church and state.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The thing is, what I just wrote is my version of this:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSuch being the impressions under which I have, in obedience to the<\/div>\n
public summons, repaired to the present station; it would be peculiarly<\/div>\n
improper to omit in this first official Act, my fervent supplications to that<\/div>\n
Almighty Being Who rules over the Universe, Who presides in the Councils<\/div>\n
of Nations, and Whose providential aids can supply every human defect,<\/div>\n
that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the<\/div>\n
People of the United States, a Government instituted by themselves for<\/div>\n
these essential purposes: and may enable every instrument employed<\/div>\n
in its administration to execute with success, the functions allotted to<\/div>\n
his charge. In tendering this homage to the Great Author of every public<\/div>\n
and private good I assure myself that it expresses your sentiments not<\/div>\n
less than my own; nor those of my fellow-citizens at large, less than<\/div>\n
either. No People can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible<\/div>\n
hand, which conducts the Affairs of men more than the People of the <\/div>\n
